In Movement, Ukrainian photographer Roman Butym reflects on the relentless pace of contemporary life. His ongoing series portrays people lying in public spaces, appearing almost like exhausted objects suspended between movement and stillness. Against a world of constant mobility and information overload, Butym’s images explore anxiety, isolation and the quiet vulnerability hidden beneath the illusion of always being ‘in the flow’.

In recent years, I have sought to photograph people as if they were exhausted objects, unable to cope with the demands of the modern world. These works reflect on resistance to the relentless pace of society, where constant mobility and information overload create the illusion of being ‘in the flow’. Yet behind this illusion often lies deep helplessness and mental fatigue.

Each image attempts to capture the moment when a person ceases to be just one of millions of pixels within the screen of society. The photographs reflect experiences familiar to many today: anxiety, isolation, and the ability to conceal one’s true self behind digital masks.

This project is an evolving process, and at this moment, the project has more than 30+ pictures.

About Roman

Roman Butym is a Ukrainian photographer based in Krakow, Poland. He specialises in reportage and fine art photography. He started shooting at the age of 16, when he first picked up a Skina 35mm camera in 2001. Alongside his commercial work, he engages in creative projects, experimenting with various forms of visual storytelling. He explores themes of identity, queer and drag culture, ecology, overconsumption, and everyday life, showing how personal experiences are intertwined with broader social processes.

In 2021, together with Ukrainian writer Pavlo Kyryk, he co-created the artistic photography project ValidityPeriod, which explores issues of overproduction and disposable society.

He is currently working on an ongoing long-term project, Movement, a visual response to the fast-paced modern lifestyle and the concept of being “in the flow.”

What Stillness Reveals

Inyeon is a Korean word for the connections between people that feel deeper than coincidence. In this series, the relationship between father and son unfolds slowly and intuitively, without a fixed narrative, focused not on specific moments but on presence itself.

Where the Water Waits

In Where the Water Waits, photographer Michael Behlen explores California's Millerton Lake as a landscape suspended between control and uncertainty. Created over three years using rare monochromatic Polaroid Reclaimed Blue film, the project captures the reservoir during storms, transforming a heavily engineered water system into an atmospheric meditation on impermanence, memory, and the ever-changing relationship between land and water.

Contrapasso

In Contrapasso, Italian photographer Massimiliano Corteselli examines the mythological and archetypal dimensions of man-made wildfires in the Mediterranean. Drawing on Dante Alighieri's concept of divine retribution, the project weaves together photography, folklore, and symbolism to reflect on greed, vengeance, and humanity's relationship with the land, creating a visual narrative that shifts between documentary, myth, and social critique.

Breaking Point

In this powerful photobook, Robin Dahlberg collaborates with six exonerees to uncover the hidden realities of coercive police interrogations. Innerland is an ongoing series of portraits by Tania Shcheglova, capturing creatives from around the world – those who dare to look into their own souls and connect with the deepest parts of their psyche. Moving beyond traditional portraiture, the project uses ‘Staged Documentary’ to reveal humans as boundless, evolving extensions of their environments, reflecting the subconscious, emotional and spiritual landscapes that shape identity beyond physical appearance.

Photographer Hui Zhang presents a very personal body of work rooted in her experiences of growing up as a ‘left-behind child’ in suburban Beijing. Shaped by family separation and social inequality, her images revisit the people and places of her upbringing, revealing a quiet sense of longing, memory and calls into question: How do we define ‘home’?

Dreaming Cleaning

Dreaming Cleaning is a poignant documentary series by photographer Almudena Zambrana that moves between softness and strain, reverie and repetition. Drawing from her lived experience as a qualified migrant working as a cleaner in Australia, Zambrana reveals the emotional and psychological weight of repetitive, often unacknowledged labour. Through cyclical, dream-like imagery, the project exposes the fragile gap between education, identity and survival.

ANTIDOTE

Antidote is a framework of five photographic series and an academic essay exploring the rise of contemporary authoritarianism.
