Bat Portraits

Dr. José Martínez-Fonseca’s series Bat Portraits reflects his commitment to documenting wildlife in some of the world’s most understudied regions. Guided by a belief that photography and research can transform fear into understanding, he captures intimate, revealing portraits that highlight bats’ beauty and ecological importance. His images invite us to look closer – and to reconsider animals often misunderstood or overlooked.

About José

Dr. José Martínez-Fonseca is a wildlife ecologist and postdoctoral researcher at Northern Arizona University’s School of Forestry. His work focuses on the ecology of bats and other mammals across the Neotropics and North America, integrating field biology with advanced spatial tools. He has authored many scientific publications and co-authored several books on mammals, herpetology, and nature.

As a wildlife photographer, his images have been featured in scientific books, museums, and conservation-focused publications worldwide. José is deeply committed to science communication and conservation capacity building throughout Latin America.
