Liminal Spaces

In her series, Katherine Flynn explores the beauty of liminal space—those transitional states found in abandoned landscapes and within ourselves. Working from a desert junkyard turned creative lab, she repurposes found VW mirrors and doors to frame her images, transforming discarded objects into vessels of memory, stillness, and reflection.

Katherine’s latest body of work emerges from her long-standing fascination with liminal space—the transitional zones where change takes place, both in the external world and within the self. Based in Landers, California, she and her daughters transformed a desert junkyard into a creative laboratory, building art from salvaged materials and found objects. These acts of making—robotic sculptures, solar systems, pirate ships—became an extension of her photographic practice: an instinctive exploration of memory, impermanence, and transformation.

After her previous exhibit, Katherine began to question traditional methods of photographic display. Seeking a presentation that would carry the same tactile, temporal energy as her images, she started using discarded VW doors and mirrors as frames. These objects, once built for movement and function, now serve as quiet, layered surfaces for reflection—both literal and emotional.

Each photograph is selected and customized to pair with the found object it inhabits. In doing so, Katherine engages in an act of reanimation: transforming waste into something meaningful, and framing her work not just visually, but thematically. Her series invites viewers to witness the stillness within motion, the sacred within the forgotten, and the enduring beauty of the in-between.

“I’ve always had a passion for desert found object art, and my daughters and I spend time building robots, spaceships, pirate ships, solar systems, etc out of the different materials and parts we discovered in the space.”
