Les fleurs

What is beauty and how do we define it? For visual artist Alina Gross, the perception and idea of beauty is completely distorted and unrealistic. With her series ‘Les fleurs’, she combines body painting with flowers and close-ups of naked female bodies to create a sensual expression of what beauty means to her.

“For me, photography is a universal language that can be understood and interpreted immediately, without prior knowledge and anywhere at lightning speed.”

In my opinion, the representation of bodies in art and the media is characterised by distorted perception and unrealistic ideals of beauty. I would like to try to rectify them with my pictures. I consciously choose a young and dynamic imagery that is provocative and avant-garde and appeals to a young and international target group.

My medium is artistic photography. The language of form is clear and minimalistic: I often work stylistically with colours. Colours are unconsciously absorbed by the viewer and used to express moods and feelings. My genres are mainly nudes and still lives. I use floral elements from nature as well as body painting. I get very close to my subjects to create a sense of intimacy and closeness.

“Over the years a clear focus has developed in my work; the individual female and feminist view, personal experiences in an artistic and abstract representation, birth, pregnancy, change.”

The depiction of flowers by Robert Mapplethorpe and the painter Georgia O’Keeffe influenced my work with plants. The sensual feminist art of Louise Bourgeois and her depiction of femininity have also influenced my work.
